MMNC Division Chairman Report 2006-2007 Session

The 2006/2007 Session of the MC Division had been filled with meaningful events and activities. The MC Division organized over 35 activities comprising technical seminars, technical visits (both local and in the Mainland) and career talks. These had enabled members of all grades to broaden their exposures and enhance their professional competencies.   Through the outreach programmes, engineering students, on the other hand, could learn more about their prospect in this profession. To achieve synergy effect, some of these activities were jointly organised with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (Hong Kong Branch), American Society of Mechanical Engineers (Hong Kong Section), Hong Kong Joint Branch of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects, the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and the Hong Kong Institute of Marine Technology.

Besides engineering institutions and societies, we also organised a seminar in this session jointly with other professions, namely the medical and clinical professions on topics of common interest. The Symposium on Health and Hygiene Control was successfully held in October 2006.

The on-line activities application/registration system, which was launched last year and found in our MC Division homepage, had been operating satisfactorily and improved our work efficiency. “MMNC Newsletter”, containing articles on interesting and non-technical topics, continued to be distributed to members periodically.

During this Session, the Division organized a technical visit to Xian in September 2006. The trip provided members with an extraordinary opportunity to see large scale engineering plants that could not possibly be found in Hong Kong, to meet with our Mainland counterparts and exchange views on latest engineering development.

To foster relationship among various divisions in the Institution and create an atmosphere for our members to freely exchange views and ideas on any subjects, the Division had organized a cocktail reception in a quasi-open area at the Tsimshatsui seafront on 30th November 2006.

The Division was also actively studying the feasibility of setting up special interest group (SIG) within the Division, and a SIG in Automotive Engineering is the most promising one now in progress.

Other than seminars and technical visits, the Division also organized social functions, such as wine tasting, dragon boat racing, and football matches during the Session.

In order to sustain close relationship with the Mainland learned societies, the Division had joined the 2nd INMEX & forum on 7th to 9th March 2007 at Guangzhou.

Lastly, whole-hearted thanks have to be conveyed to all Committee Members and helpers who contributed so much of their valuable time and effort to enable the Division complete such a significant number of tasks, activities and functions in this session.
